Adopting a plant-based lifestyle in 1 week

When I used to socialize with vegans or vegetarians, I thought I could NEVER stop eating meat. I thought it was such a difficult decision to make. Little did I know the habits I started to make would lead me in that direction effortlessly. 

What influenced me to finally make the change was the movie Game Changers, then in November 2019, I made the decision to try it out. My friends and family thought I was crazy since the holidays were coming up. 

Here is how I was able to adopt a plant-based lifestyle in 1 week

Digging deep

I have always been curious by nature. I wanted to feel what others felt when going plant-based. I knew I was doing this for my health. I do not have any health problems, but my family members, mostly the older generation, do not have great eating habits. Many of them passed away due to preventable health concerns. I knew I wanted something different for myself. 

Eating Habits

Prior to going completely plant-based, I was already eating a combination of whole food and animal products including eggs and meat. Since I was already eating predominantly whole foods, this made the switch easier. I am lactose-intolerant. However, I ate it, and still do on a rare occasion. I am currently working on permanently removing it from my diet. 

Binge-research

Thanks to the internet, I was able to find plant-based YouTube channels such as Avantgardenvegan, NutritionRefined, and Pick Up Limes. Other notable mentions are Plant Based News, Mike the Vegan, and Edgy Veg. Another thanks to the Youtube algorithms for suggesting related topics. Through my research, I quickly learned there are different types of plant-based communities not just lifestyles. 

Kitchen inventory

I reviewed what was both in my pantry and fridge since I knew what to look for. I made a list of my staple meals I ate regularly. I also identified foods and ingredients that are vegetarian. This helped me build from what I already had so I did not feel like I had to start from scratch. Vegetarian stocked items must-haves include but are not limited to Tahini and Nutritional Yeast.

Vegetarianize favorite recipes

As a beginner, plant-based mock meats and beans are your best friend. They make it easy to swap animal meat for mock meat. For instance, if you like spaghetti and meatballs, swap the meatballs for plant-based mock meat or homemade bean meatballs. It can be easy to fail because you think you have to start from scratch, and then you start to feel like you don’t know what to eat so it becomes difficult. 

Final thoughts on how I adopted a plant-based lifestyle in 1 week

One thing that I have learned from the entire experience is that you can’t say something is difficult if you have never tried it yourself. The decision to go plant-based in 1 week became easier when I knew my why. I wanted to feel healthier, feel energized, and live longer. Something I never thought I would do, I did. Just like Justin Bieber’s song, never say never.
